Fire Retardant Spraying for Curtains

Updated: Dec 16, 2023

Introduction

When it comes to protecting your space from fire hazards, fire retardant spraying for curtains is an essential step. We understand the importance of fire safety at Fireproofing and have provided certified BS5867 Part 2 Type B fire retardant spraying services for our clients for 3 decades.

Recently, we were commissioned by the Royal Opera House Studios to provide our services for one of their rehearsal studios. The curtains in the studio were 5 meters high and covered the entire perimeter, and the client reached out to us via our Get Your Quote form. We promptly responded with a quote and scheduled an appointment for the treatment.

BS5867 Part 2 2008: Type B Standard

BS 5867 Part 2 2008 is a British Standard that specifies the performance requirements and test methods for flame retardant fabrics used in the manufacture of curtains, drapes, and other decorative soft furnishings for domestic and contract use.

Type B fabrics, which are intended for use in public buildings and places of assembly, must meet certain minimum requirements for flame resistance, ignition resistance, and flame spread, as well as pass a smouldering cigarette test.

The standard is designed to ensure that fabrics used in decorative soft furnishings meet certain minimum levels of flame retardancy and are suitable for use in a variety of settings, but does not guarantee complete fire safety.

In-House Testing

Fireproofing conducts in-house testing to verify that our products meet the demands of our clients. We specialise in testing delicate materials such as polyester velvet, which must be handled with care when it comes to fireproofing.

We've included a video below of in-house testing on a 100% polyester velvet cloth to illustrate the efficacy of our product. When the flame is withdrawn, the sample does not drip and immediately extinguishes, indicating that our product is up to the task.

Getting a BS5867 Part 2 Type B Certificate

To get a BS5867 Part 2 Type B certificate for your curtains, simply complete our Get Your Quote form. Include your location and measurements to ensure an accurate quote. Once the service is completed and payment is received, you will receive a BS5867 Part 2 2008: Type B treatment certificate for your records.

This certificate indicates that the treatment of the curtains will last for five years or five dry cleans, whichever is reached first. If the curtains become wet at any point, re-treatment is necessary.
