Introduction
When two houses were rented to students, a fire risk assessment revealed that some wood panelling under the stairs posed a fire hazard. To meet the university's safety requirements and be issued a license for student accommodation, the wood panelling needed to be fire-resistant. To ensure this, a 30-minute fire protection treatment was applied.
The landlord got in touch and gave us the information we needed about the fire rating, the type of wood, and the number of square metres (m2) that needed to be treated.
The Method
An adhesion primer was applied to the varnished wood before two coats of clear intumescent lacquer were added. To complete the process, a fire-protective topcoat with a satin finish was selected by the client. The image below displays how the original colour and finish were kept intact prior to the topcoat being added.
Intumescent Paint for Wood
The products we use form a barrier when exposed to flames that greatly slow the spread of fire. Fire retardant intumescent paint can be clear, white, or tinted to a colour of your choice.
The topcoat is necessary to finish the process and is available in a choice of matt, satin, or gloss, and can be suitable for interior and exterior use.
Certification
At the end of the 30-minute fire protection treatment, a detailed certificate was presented outlining the treated wood, pictures, process, products used, fire rating, and additional notes.
