Revitalizing The Roundhouse with Fire Retardant Spraying for Timber Cladding

Updated: Dec 23, 2023

Introduction: Elevating Fire Safety in Timber Cladding

In our latest project at the iconic Roundhouse Building within Warwick Brewery's apartment complex in Newark on Trent, we demonstrated our specialized skills in fire retardant spraying for timber cladding. Tasked with updating the building's 15-year-old pine thermowood cladding to meet the rigorous BS EN 13501-1 Class B fire safety standards, our approach was characterized by meticulous precision and advanced technical expertise.

Project Initiation: Responding to Fire Safety Standards in Timber Cladding

Our involvement in upgrading The Roundhouse Building's fire safety began with a direct phone call from the property developer, followed by detailed project specifications via email. This collaboration was essential in crafting a targeted response to a tenant's survey, which had underscored the urgent need to enhance the fire resistance of the timber cladding to Euro Class B standards. This proactive approach by the developer highlighted the critical nature of the project and its potential impact on future property sales.

The Challenge: Balancing Aesthetics and Fire Safety in Timber Construction

The Roundhouse Building's visual appeal, driven by its timber cladding, required an upgrade in safety without compromising its aesthetics. Our task was to align the building's cladding with the latest fire safety standards.

Fire Retardant Solution: Achieving Class B Compliance in Timber Cladding

We proposed a treatment plan involving the application of a specialized fire retardant, aimed at achieving Class B fire safety compliance for the timber cladding. The fire retardant we use impregnates the wood and lasts its lifetime without maintenance.

Inspection and Compliance: Verifying Fire Barriers in Timber Construction

Before proceeding with the treatment, it was crucial to ensure the presence of fire barriers behind the cladding. This involved a detailed inspection and verification process organised by the client.

Application Process: Advanced Techniques in Fire Retardant Spraying

Equipped with a cherry picker and backed by my IPAF 3a, 3b qualifications, we meticulously applied the fire retardant from top to bottom. We used a battery-operated sprayer with a specialized nozzle for consistent coverage and minimal overspray.

Safety Measures: Prioritizing Protection in Fire Retardant Application

Safety was our top priority. We took measures to protect the surrounding areas, including cordoning off the car park and cleaning any overspray on windows to minimize impact on residents.

Achieving Compliance: Lasting Results in Fire Retardant Treatment for Timber

The fire retardant treatment significantly enhanced the cladding's safety, ensuring it met Class B compliance standards, with its deep penetration and long-lasting protection.

Project Reflections: Expertise and Challenges in Timber Cladding Fire Safety

This project not only tested our skills in fire retardant application but also deepened our understanding of maintaining safety standards in timber construction.

Conclusion: Elevating Fire Safety in Timber Construction at The Roundhouse

The transformation of The Roundhouse Building is a story of adapting to evolving safety standards, emphasizing the importance of expert solutions in fire safety for timber structures.

Take the Next Step Towards Enhanced Fire Safety
